Self-determination guided as a tool to improve the diabetes healthcare. Literature Revision

Abstract

Introduction: The Self-determination method (SDM) promotes the reflection and the share decision making through a motivational component and abilities develment for the self-management handling of the diabetes in the day to day. 

Objective: Identify the evidence about the self-determination method as a tool to improve the share decision making about the diabetes care. Method: A revision about the SDM literature was carried out, experimental and no experimental studies were included on data bases like: Pubmed. Health Virtual Library and CINHAL. The sample was confirmed by 14 studies. 

Results: The SDM focus on the development of the abilities for the life, in addition it improves the nurse-patient communication through the reflection sheets use, focus on the hard control issues, related to the diabetes. Studies denote a significant improve in the anguish and stress because of the diabetes and other psychosocial elements as well as the autonomy perceived. Discussion: The reflection sheets helped deepen in the dialogue between the patients and the health personal clarifying the day-to-day hard control problems about the diabetes. 

Conclusions: The importance of having nursing and health professionals involved in clarifying difficult-to-manage daily diabetes problems is evident. The importance of having nursing and health professionals who are more reflective about the daily challenges of diabetes management and focused on shared decision-making for diabetes control is evident. 

Biography

Liliana González Juarez has completed his PHD at the age of 46 years University of Alicante, Spain. She is a full professor in the field of community health nursing in the UNAM, México. She has over 20 publications that have been cited over 300 times, and his publication h-index is 8. And given more than 100 lectures. She has served on editorial boards of several nursing journals.
