The emergence of cardio-oncology
Abstract
I
n recent years, the field of cardio-oncology has gained prominence as advancements in cancer treatment have led
to improved survival rates, but also to an increased recognition of cardiovascular complications associated with
cancer therapies. In a recent retrospective study, 6.6 % of patients with breast or hematological cancer who received
chemotherapy went on to develop heart failure. Interestingly, cancer and coronary artery disease share common cellular
and genetic pathways as well as risk factor profiles. Overall, the management of patients with cancer is complex and
requires a multidisciplinary team approach involving oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and clinical cardiologists. The
aim of this review is to provide an overview of chemotherapy and radiotherapy-related cardiotoxicity, with a special
focus on diagnosis, prevention, and management. In conclusion, cardio-oncology represents a critical interface between
cardiovascular health and cancer treatment. By recognizing and addressing the cardiovascular complications associated
with cancer therapies, cardio-oncologists strive to improve the overall well-being and outcomes of cancer patients.
With ongoing research and collaboration, the field of cardio-oncology is poised to make further advancements in the
prevention, detection, and management of cardiotoxicity, ultimately enhancing the quality and longevity of life for cancer
survivors.
