The Left Atrial Appendage and Atrial Fibrillation: What Is Already Known and What Is Ahead
Abstract
This literature review discusses the results of recent clinical studies and large meta-analyses on surgical isolation of the left atrial appendage in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. The article also discusses the general morphological and pathogenetic mechanisms of the formation of left atrial appendage thrombosis and analyzes the current evidence in favor of the need to close the appendage during coronary artery bypass surgery in the light of the prevention of ischemic thromboembolic events.
