Cardiac cephalgia as a manifestation of acute coronary events : A systematic review
Abstract
Acute coronary events cause concern in the global healthcare sector. This is due to the high prevalence of coronary events, especially among women and elderly populations who are more at risk of developing these events. The most common coronary events are myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction, unstable angina, abnormal heart rhythm, and heart failure. Therefore, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of cardiac cephalgia as a manifestation of acute coronary events. The preferred design for this study was a literature review. The research carried out an in-depth literature review by searching several databases to find relevant journal articles for use in this study. The databases that were searched are EBSCO, PubMed, ProQuest, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, and WOS. The results revealed a total of 10 peer-reviewed journal articles were identified. Six out of these articles were quantitative studies, two of them were Randomized Controlled (RCTs) , while the remaining two were case studies on the phenomenon under study. In all the studies, the total number of participants was 80, 202. The emerging themes in the studies that were reviewed are the direct link between cardiac cephalgia and acute coronary events, migraine - headache - with aura and increased risk of coronary events, and characteristics of headaches in patients with acute coronary events. In conclusion, the studies that were reviewed showed that cardiac cephalgia is indeed an indication of the existence of acute coronary events, such as unstable angina and coronary artery diseases.
