Association Between Baseline Soluble ST2 Levels and Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction in Patients With Heart Failure
Abstract
Background: Soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2 (sST2) is an emerging biomarker reflecting myocardial fibrosis and remodeling in patients with heart failure (HF). However, its relationship with left ventricular systolic function remains incompletely characterized.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 100 patients diagnosed with heart failure. Baseline serum sST2 concentrations and echocardiographic left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were assessed at enrollment. The association between sST2 and LVEF was evaluated using Spearman correlation analysis.
Results: A significant inverse correlation was observed between baseline sST2 levels and LVEF (Spearman's r = −0.398, p < 0.001). Higher circulating sST2 concentrations were associated with lower left ventricular systolic function, suggesting increased myocardial remodeling in patients with reduced ejection fraction.
Conclusions: Baseline sST2 levels demonstrated a significant inverse association with LVEF in patients with heart failure. These findings support the potential role of sST2 as a biomarker reflecting the severity of left ventricular systolic dysfunction and warrant further investigation in larger prospective studies.
